Many of the dinner shows - because they're so popular will actually let you reserve up to 2 years in advance.
About Disney Dining Reservations:
These reservations don't work like normal reservations - they don't hold a specific table just for you.
When you have advance reservations, it means that you will be seated in front of everyone else without reservations. (It's kind of like a Fast Pass for restaurants).
Because of this, you may have to wait 5-15 minutes to get seated. However that's still a lot better than waiting 45 minutes - or not getting seated at all.
Dining Tip: Try arriving around 15 minutes early at the restaurant - many people swear that they get in faster this way.
Why make reservations? Why can't I just walk in?
Well, you can try. In the less crowded seasons you may be able to get into certain restaurants - however this is not guaranteed.
You may not also be able to get into the restaurant YOU want, as the most popular restaurants are usually booked early, even in the slower seasons.
Dining Fact: All Disney restaurants are now non-smoking.
Reservation Cautions:
It's a smart move to take your confirmation number with you when you go. I've tried Disney restaurants without my confirmation number and they were fine without it (they keep your name on their computer file).
But it's better to be safe than sorry - especially if there's a computer glitch and they lose your reservation information.
Also, some of the more popular Disney restaurants will charge you a fee if you don't show up. If they ask for your credit cart - make sure you show up, or cancel your reservation well in advance.
Dining Tip: If you don't have a reservation but really want to try a specific restaurant, you can either call from your resort, see the concierge at the resort or show up at off-peak hours (like 4:30 for dinner).
